The John Birch Society

altIt happened just in time, the salmonella egg outbreak and recall, that is. Remarkably so, in fact, to help boost the chances of Senate Bill 510's passing. The Food Safety Modernization Act, whose companion bill H.R. 2749 already passed in the House, was facing quite the uphill battle. But not any more; a vote is now highly likely with approval possible if not probable.

cybersecurity

“To amend the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and other laws to enhance the security and resiliency of the cyber and communications infrastructure of the United States.” These are the words used to describe the latest cybersecurity bill, S. 3480  "Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010," introduced on June 10 and cosponsored by Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Tom Carper (D-Del.).

There’s a lot of confusion occurring over what’s being nullified by the “Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act” legislation that’s been introduced in over 30 states, and already enacted into law in Virginia, Idaho, Arizona, Georgia, Missouri, and Louisiana. This legislation has been based on model legislation developed by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) back in December 2008, over a year before ObamaCare finally became law.

AmericanismThis article was originally published in the January 9, 1995 issue of The Birch Log.

There has to be a definition of Americanism somewhere. Yet it is quite obvious that many Americans would be hard-pressed to come up with one. A housewife might offer that it is a combination of patriotism and love of tradition. That's good, but not very specific.

altOh yes, those legislative busybody scanners are at it again, mandating that full-body imaging x-ray devices be installed in every airport in the nation by 2013, under the illusory premise of increasing safety.

altThe following article originally appeared in the October 2, 1995 issue of The Birch Log. Its message is even more timely today than when it was first written 15 years ago.

Our nation is in the midst of an ongoing revolution in which leaders allow and even promote the casting adrift of the values, traditions, and behavior that have fostered America's greatness. Many of those who should be protecting our nation's cultural heritage are insidiously working to destroy it. One of the means being used to carry out this sinister business is uncontrolled immigration.

altJBS CEO Art Thompson offers his analysis of the week's news and wastes no time in discussing tax breaks, Obama's new infrastructure spending bill, manipulation of facts, Afghanistan corruption and using taxpayer's dollars to bail out an Afghan bank. He also gets into the upcoming election and explains how good politicians get co-opted.

constitution day

This article first appeared as "An Excellent Project for All" by John F. McManus in the JBS Bulletin, July 2010.

In 2004, Congress enacted legislation requiring all publicly funded educational institutions to provide students with instruction about the U.S. Constitution. The law (Public Law 108-447) specified that it should be given on September 17, the date of the completion of the Constitution in 1787.
