Response to Clarence Page’s July 27 Column

In his July 27th column, Clarence Page mentioned The John Birch Society right alongside the Ku Klux Klan. This is a very unjust type of smear. By merely mentioning the KKK with the Society, many readers will conclude that the two organizations are similar. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In his July 27th column, Clarence Page mentioned The John Birch Society right alongside the Ku Klux Klan. This is a very unjust type of smear. By merely mentioning the KKK with the Society, many readers will conclude that the two organizations are similar. Nothing could be further from the truth. And by describing the John Birch Society local chapters as “cells,” he has demonstrated a failure to properly research his columns before recklessly impugning the reputation of one of the oldest educational organizations dedicated to Constitutional limited government and the rule of law.

From its inception, JBS has always sought to counter those who were busily seeking to take away American liberties, destroying American sovereignty, and ignoring the U.S. Constitution by centralizing government’s power. Its vision of “less government, more responsibility and -- with God’s help -- a better world” became an educational platform that has guided patriot activism since 1958. This isn’t the effort of “zealots” (Mr. Page’s description), but the work of dedicated activists seeking to return prosperity to the American people through education, truth, morality and self-reliance.

Nor has the Society ever created any “quasi-secret ‘front’ groups.” Its nationally known “Support Your Local Police” and “Get US Out of the United Nations” committees are recognized from coast to coast as having been originated by JBS.  Society members want the public to know that it is their organization that has always been the initiator of these efforts.

Thankfully, millions of Americans have become aware that some elements of the media use these Clarence Page-style smear tactics to further their work and to steer fellow Americans away from the real solutions needed to set America back on its correct course. A Sept. 2010 Gallup poll suggests that “Distrust in U.S. Media Edges Up to Record High.”

With distorted commentaries like the one just issued by Mr. Page, it’s no wonder why.
