I sent the following e-mail to Senator John McCain of Arizona regarding the Cap and Trade bill that recently passed the House of Representatives: Dear Senator McCain:
I oppose the "Cap and Trade" bill that recently passed the House. I do not believe that human activity is responsible for the recent warming trend on earth. There has been warming on Mars and Jupiter too, and human activity certainly had nothing to do with that.
The way it was explained to me is that human activity contributes less than 1% of the total CO2 in the environment. Of that fraction of a percent, only a tiny fraction could be reduced by Cap and Trade or any other legislation. It is very unlikely that our efforts to reduce CO2 will have any impact on global temperatures. Beyond this, it is clear that taxing emissions will accelerate the relocation of American industries to foreign countries that do not have such taxes. We have already given Communist China a lot more of our money and industrial capacity than was good for us for them to have.
I heard a report that the Cap and Trade Bill might contain a provision for a tariff on goods imported from countries that do not comply with American emissions standards. Congress has stood by and watched the American manufacturing base wither away for many years. I do not believe that there will suddenly be a change of policy. Even if included in a final version of the bill, such a provision would probably be struck down in court as being in violation of America's international agreements. I would be very encouraged to hear that you plan to vote against this bill. Please let me know.
