However, journalist Donna Bowater cited another expert in her report for Express.com.uk, British forecaster Jonathan Powell, of Positive Weather Solutions, who said:
If it is the case and it is borne out that January was the hottest on record, it is still no marker towards climate change. It’s all part of a cyclical issue and nothing should be read too deeply into that. It’s been the coldest for 30 years in Britain but we predicted that and climate change always tends to throw up anomalies. It’s all in line with predictions and I won’t be sold on climate change at all. The data is either faulty or manufactured to make it look like it shouldn’t.
Ms. Bowater also referenced the recent scandal dubbed “Climategate,” noting that many scientists who had been advancing claims of man-made (anthropogenic) climate change were “humiliated when emails emerged suggesting researchers at the University of East Anglia had been selective with weather data.”
She noted that following the embarrassing revelations, the British Daily Express “published a dossier of 100 reasons why the rise in world temperatures is natural and not caused by man.”
There are further signs that — thanks to the persistent outcry of more conscientious scientists who have dared protest that the theory of man-made climate change is scientifically unsustainable — the “global warming” hysteria has finally run its course.
On February 1,
The American Interest published a blog entitled “The Death of Global Warming” by Walter Russell Mead, the Henry A Kissinger senior fellow for U.S. foreign policy at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).
With such prestigious Establishment credentials, Mead would certainly have his finger on the pulse of the world’s movers and shakers, who have largely thrown their weight behind the global warmers until Climategate made such a position suspect. Mead writes:
None of the above is news to steady readers of The New American magazine and other material disseminated by The John Birch Society. Having a natural skepticism for the mass media hacks and the Al Gores of this world who have the advanced global warming so relentlessly, the JBS and other anti-big government folks sought out alternative opinions from scientists whose credentials equalled or surpassed those promoting the theory. They found such contradictory evidence in works such as Hot Talk, Cold Science, and Unstoppable Global Warming Every 1500 Years, by S. Fred Singer, a top environmental scientist and former director of the U.S. Weather Satellite Service. Other common-sense books on the subject include The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) and Red Hot Lies: How Global Warming Alarmists Use Threats, Fraud, and Deception to Keep You Misinformed by Christopher C. Horner; and Meltdown, by Patrick Michaels.
The conclusion reached in these scientific studies is that climate change is a cyclical event that has always been produced naturally by the Earth’s own environmental forces, and has little or nothing to do with the intervention of man.
However, “global warming,” like all crises natural and man made — provides those who would increase the size and scope of government to “solve” the crisis with a credible excuse to increase their own power.
What is news is not what Walter Russell Mead has written in his blog, but the fact that it is he, an establishment man and CFR member, who is writing it.
In reflecting on “Climategate,” Mead continues:
Now that the cat is out of the bag, the well-credentialed CFR types of the world must protect their credibility at all costs. As usual, they will let the street-level dupes and political amateurs take the fall while they retreat into their ivory towers planning other ways to increase their power and influence, while never getting their hands dirty.
