Malissa Durkee holds a photo of her brother Michael Brewer on October 14. Five teens have been charged with aggravated battery for dousing Brewer with rubbing alcohol and setting him on fire. If you don't think there is something wrong in America today, you haven't seen the story of fifteen-year-old Michael Brewer. According to witnesses and [suspect Jesus] Mendez's confession, Bent ordered them to pour rubbing alcohol over Brewer after surrounding him at an apartment complex in the 400 block of SE 13th Court. Denver Colorado Jarvis, 15, then doused him with the fluid. Shortly thereafter, Mendez took a lighter to him and Brewer went up in flames. Two other boys, Jarvis' brother, Jeremy, and Steven Shelton, 15, stood by saying nothing, according to BSO. Brewer ran to a swimming pool and jumped in -- a move that doctors said may have saved his life. This atrocity committed by kids against another kid is one of a line of such atrocities stretching back to the massacre at Columbine. Every time one of these horrible crimes occurs, the question is asked why they continue to happen.

... Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! - Isaiah 5:20-23 We live in a country which aborts 1.3 million children per year. There are an estimated 100,000 related alcohol related deaths each year. Marriage has become a joke with same sex marriage, never marrieds, divorce and remarriage, and single parent households. Pornography is easy to obtain and sexual perversity is rampant. Church membership is in a free fall. Many "churches" have all but abandoned the Bible. Christians are mocked in the movies and on television. American heroes are sports stars, profane rappers, and degenerate Hollywood icons. Yet many constitutional conservatives insist upon asking God to bless America. We are asking for the wrong thing. We need to be asking God to HELP America! |

... I must agree with RP. People just hate when you mention Christianity, or the ten commandments. They don't want to be told they aren't allowed to do whatever they want without boundaries. Everyone wants to do their own thing-everything goes...they don't want decency or old fashioned values. Being on the fringe or extreme is what's cool, sought after, and admired. We are becoming a nation of selfish degenerates! We have only to look at the fall of Rome. I see a parallel between our societies. |

... It is with sadness that I state that I am not shocked by this news. We have desensitized our children to an extreme. Not only are the youth lacking personal accountability they seem to have no empathy for human life. As a mother of four ages 24-12 I have witnessed a swift descent since the onset of rapid mass communication. Too much information; given too soon, poor parenting, lack of accountability. I am attending college as to become a counselor, I may be too late. |

Fallen morality worldwide panedemic Some excellent points raised here; might I add this is downward spiral in sociological morality is not only prevalent in America, but in most nations worldwide. A glance at any newspaper in Europe or Asia will attest to this. Indeed, Revelations points to this process, reflecting that the closer we come to Jesus' return, the more we shall witness a widening of the gap between those who choose to walk the narrow path and those who do not. Dennis, you shed light on the difference between individual morality and group morality. Perhaps we need to use this thought as a springboard to personal revelation; where do we stand in terms of our preparedness for HIM, should HE appear today? Are our lamps full? Do we know HIS voice? On which side of the fence are we sitting? Gone are the days when we can comfortably sit on that precarious divider, pretending it is more than acceptable to simply witness those on either side; truth be told it was always an illusion. In HIS perfect timing HE is calling us to accountability. What will your role be? |

... We, as a nation, need to repent for our transgressions against a holy God. And the sooner the better. Time is very short - it is well past the 11th hour. For Christians who are knowledgeable about the 2nd coming, you are aware of the "perilous times" revealed in prophecy. We can only hope that God in His mercy will spare our nation, and not reap what has been sown. I pray that Michael and his family be sustained by the goodness of His mercy and the medical staff who surround him. |
