Earlier today, Sharon Clark posted a blog, "What Specific Action Are We Requesting." In this blog Sharon asked (I've added numbers to the questions):
Sharon is referring to a new item in our Legislative Action section on JBS.org, "An Open Letter to Our Nation's Leadership by Janet Contreras." Re question no. 1: The letter to Congress regarding the Glenn Beck video and Janet's letter is not intended to address a specific piece of legislation; however, it is serving our general agenda as described in the "JBS.org Freedom Campaign" article on page three of the JBS Bulletin for June 2009. I wrote there: Yes, there are numerous dangerous pieces of legislation and treaties to oppose; however, what’s most needed now is a rapid build-up of constitution-based, grassroots organizations that would provide the necessary pressure to stop, or at least slow down, Congress and the Obama administration this year. This degree of grassroots pressure would help create a changed political atmosphere within which more constitutionalist candidates could be elected to both state and national offices next year. That is to say, although it is generally good practice to write to your congressman about only one topic or specific bill in any one email or letter, we are living in an extraordinary time when the President and Congress are ignoring the Constitution and usurping the powers and rights of states, businesses, and individuals on a daily basis. If we get too caught up in trying to stop specific legislative bills when the makeup of Congress is stacked against us, then we'll lose the precious time we need to use for building up a constitution-based grassroots movement that would begin to slow down our out-of-control government, but more importantly that would begin to change the polical atmosphere so that a majority of constitutionalists could be elected to Congress in the years to come. Janet's letter was used as a basis for a letter to Congress because her letter is a beautiful example of the constitution-based, no-nonsense attitude that we need to have toward our elected representatives in Congress as we build up the necessary grassroots movement. This attitude includes the acknowledgement that a whole lot more Americans must take time out of their busy lives and work together to bring our government back under control using the Constitution as a guide. Janet also mentioned many specific issues that the JBS has advocated over the past few years. Re no. 2: As the subject line of the pre-written editable email in the alert says: "Please Act Now to Bring Our Government Back Under the Control of the Constitution" Re no. 3: We are emphatically not taking direction from Glenn Beck. I've written several blogs on JBS.org and an article that will appear in the next issue of The New American that take Glenn Beck to task for having had Prof. Randy Barnett and Judge Andrew Napolitano on his TV show advocating the desirability of a constitutional convention several times each during the past couple months without any rebuttal or contradiction. |
