A circuit court judge in Virginia ordered the release on August 23 of Brandon J. Raub, a Chesterfield man held involuntarily as a psychiatric patient at the Salem Veterans Affairs hospital in Virginia over anti-government postings on his Facebook page.
A federal appeals court has ruled that the state of Texas can move ahead with a law it passed to defund abortion giant Planned Parenthood. On August 21 the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed an injunction imposed by a federal judge that would have allowed the state funding to continue pending the results of a lawsuit Planned Parenthood had filed to challenge the law. The Associated Press reported that the measure, passed by the Republican-controlled Texas state legislature in early 2012, will block Planned Parenthood clinics and other abortion providers from receiving funds for “family planning” services dispersed through the state's Women's Health Program.
Hundreds of activists showed up at a hearing about so-called “smart meters” held by the Texas Public Utility Commission this week, with most of them seeking a way to opt-out from receiving one of the controversial electricity meters that critics link to serious privacy and health concerns. A Republican member of the state legislature even promised that if the PUC refused to allow consumers a choice, he would introduce legislation to force its hand.

In a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay of the "Gitmo Five," information about the imprisonment and interrogation methods used on the defendants remains classified "Top Secret," prompting their defense attorneys and others to argue that and other secrecy requirements undermine the defendants' right to a fair trial.
Republican lawmakers investigating the Obama administration’s deadly “Fast and Furious” gun-trafficking scandal want to know why one of the top disgraced figures at the center of the scheme — William McMahon, who may soon be prosecuted for perjury — is now on “paid leave” collecting a six-figure paycheck while working full-time for banking giant J.P. Morgan overseas. The revelations of “double dipping” and the looming potential prosecution represent the latest chapters in an ongoing saga that countless analysts have dubbed Obama’s “Watergate.”
The Congressional Budget Office released its economic analysis for 2013 in its annual summer budget update on Wednesday, reporting, “The sharp increases in federal taxes and reductions in federal spending that are scheduled under current law to begin in calendar year 2013 are likely to interrupt the recent economic progress.” While some experts predict that the impact will be less dire than projected and are more focused on the deficit and interest rates, lawmakers are butting heads over just how to prevent the dramatic economic shift predicted by the CBO.
On Sunday, August 19, Republican Senate candidate from Missouri, Todd Akin, embroiled himself in a world of national controversy. Dr. Kerwick provides an analysis of Republicans' reaction to Todd Akin's remarks on rape and abortion.
15-term House member Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) has been milking the system for years, the latest being obtaining VIP treatment from Countrywide Financial and then denying it.
Conservative-leaning Texas Judge Tom Head warned this week that Obama’s re-election could spark mass unrest and possibly even a civil war — especially if the president decided to cede even more U.S. sovereignty to the United Nations or call in UN troops to deal with a potential American uprising. But county officials are preparing accordingly, he added, touting a local tax increase to prepare for various “contingencies.”
