The John Birch Society
After Charles Lindbergh flew The Spirit of St. Louis from New York to France in 1927, completing the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight, he became America’s most admired hero. “The Lone Eagle,” as he was called, then helped develop aviation and married Anne Morrow, daughter of diplomat Dwight Morrow. Anne learned to fly, and she and Charles made spectacular intercontinental flights together. In 1930, the first of their six children, Charles, Jr., was born, dubbed “the Eaglet” by the press.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu is claiming that scientific evidence for climate change is as convincing as ever — a comment that arrives just as controversies surrounding the renewable energy industry and new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules face staunch opposition from Republicans and industry groups.
A new Tennessee law, passed without the signature of Republican Governor Bill Haslam, will allow the teaching and discussion of creation theory alongside evolution in the state’s science classrooms. While Haslam did not veto the bill, he did not sign it into law either, citing concerns he had over its possible negative impact on science curriculums.
Otto Otepka is not a name that automatically rings bells in the minds of most Americans, even those Americans with a historical understanding of the role of communism in suborning our government. Yet as William Gill relates in his magisterial work, The Ordeal of Otto Otepka, often lonely individuals guided only by their patriotism, their conscience, and their faith have been the Horatio at the Bridge, protecting the rest of us from evil.
Values clarification is a humanist program that seeks to carry out Prof. Benjamin Bloom’s supposed purpose of education: “to effect a complete or thorough-going reorganization of [the student’s] attitudes and values.” The evidence suggests, Bloom wrote, that “a single hour of classroom activity under certain conditions may bring about a major reorganization in cognitive as well as affective behaviors.”
President Obama, who has declared that his views on marriage are “evolving,” has come out in opposition to Minnesota’s proposed state constitutional amendment that would define marriage as only between a man and a woman. The voter initiative, passed by the state legislature in May 2011 and set for the November ballot, reads: “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.”
A coalition of Tea Party groups has decided that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is making it too difficult for start-up Tea Party groups to qualify for tax exempt status and so is creating one to fight back. The group is complaining about IRS requests for thousands of pages of documentation required to obtain or to keep their exempt status under Section 501(c)4 of the Internal Revenue Code. Eric Wilson, director of Kentucky’s 9/12 Project accused the IRS of “targeting local Tea Party, liberty groups and ordinary citizens” with an 88-question IRS questionnaire and demands that it be completed and returned within two weeks.
The now-infamous 2010 Las Vegas conference that resulted in the resignation of General Services Administration (GSA) chief Martha Johnson, has spurred even more controversy, as documents show that GSA employees received bonuses for their work planning the lavish, taxpayer-funded convention.
A joint task force of American law enforcement and intelligence agencies is drafting a plan to prevent cyber attacks and information leaks from those working inside the agencies.
Asia Bibi is a mother of five children and a devout Christian. She is also on death row — for “blasphemy.” And incredibly, she lives under a government that receives billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars every year: Pakistan, one of the top recipients of American foreign aid. Over the last 10 years, the Pakistani regime has raked in well over $20 billion from U.S. taxpayers.
