 The red ink on the U.S. Postal Service’s (USPS) accounting books is flowing more steadily, as the agency reported Thursday a $5.2-billion net loss for the third quarter, boosting its fiscal year-to-date loss to a startling $11.6 billion. After factoring in the 274 days comprising the first three quarters of fiscal 2012, the debt-ridden agency has lost an average of $42,335,766 per day this year.
 Standing near the USS Wisconsin, berthed at the Nauticus science center and museum in Norfolk, Virginia, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney named Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate on August 10.
 A group of concerned citizens known as PANDA (People Against the National Defense Act), formed in January 2012, has organized protests nationwide against the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA. PANDA Indiana has scheduled a march against the National Defense Authorization Act today to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.

 The latest survey of immigrants to the United States shows their numbers increased massively under the last two presidents, reaching a record high in 2010. That’s just one of the trends noted in “Immigrants in the United States: A Profile of America’s Foreign-Born Population,” published by the Center for Immigration Studies. CIS gathered its data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Those data show that immigrants from the Third World are swamping the United States and its public institutions.
 The latest numbers from China on its gross domestic product, factory output and electricity usage all show a bubble bursting. Kevin Yao, writing from Beijing for Reuters, expressed surprise when the latest numbers about China’s factory output came in at its lowest level in three years: “China’s factory output growth slowed unexpectedly in July…[due to] stiff global headwinds…”
 Despite assurances that he would not diminish the right of fair use in American copyright law, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk appears to be doing just that during secret negotiations being conducted on the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (also known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP).
 Representative Steve King (R-Iowa) promises to sue Obama over recent immigration executive order, and intends to repeal everything the President has signed into law.
George Zimmerman, accused of murder by state prosecutors in Trayvon Martin’s fatal shooting, will be seeking a hearing aimed at getting the charges dismissed by a judge before the case even goes to trial, his attorney announced on Thursday in a widely anticipated move. Legal analysts say that, based on Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law and available evidence, Zimmerman has a good chance at success. An attorney for Martin’s family, however, vehemently disagreed. 
 A federal judge has ruled in favor of a Hawaii law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman, as well as a constitutional amendment that gives the state legislature the power to maintain the traditional definition of marriage.
