The John Birch Society
Following the lead of its standard bearer, the Democratic Party has decided to make legalizing same-sex marriage an official plank of its campaign platform. A spokesman for the Democratic National Committee said July 30 that the party’s drafting committee had voted during a weekend meeting in Minneapolis to add the party’s formal support for homosexual marriage.
Conservatism is defensive in nature, being concerned with conserving the status quo, but never builds its ramparts high enough to be unscalable or wields its sword boldly enough to slay those who would breach its walls. Liberals ever return to the bargaining table asking for more laws, mandates, regulations or programs, and conservatives are always “reasonable.” And the end result is inevitable: After enough time, the Left has everything it wants.
The city of Steubenville in eastern Ohio — best known for being Dean Martin's hometown and the home of Franciscan University — has become one of the most recent victims of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) after the Wisconsin-based atheist organization demanded that the community remove a religious symbol from its official logo. The godless group intruded in the city’s business when a local resident supposedly complained about the logo, which had been unveiled by the city in 2011.
Representative Edward Markey (D.-Mass.) sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on July 30 asking the U.S. government to block the proposed acquisition of Canadian oil company Nexen by CNOOC, China’s state-owned oil company. Because Nexen holds leases for oil drilling in U.S. waters in the Gulf of Mexico, which represent about 10 percent of the firm’s assets, the proposed Chinese-Canadian merger is subject to U.S. approval.
As President Obama’s landmark healthcare law penetrates deeper into implementation, signs of medical rationing are sprouting, as 16 states have enacted a limit on the number prescription drugs they will insure for Medicaid recipients.
Congressional investigators probing the Obama administration’s deadly “Fast and Furious” gun-running scheme concluded that senior Justice Department figures and five top officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) were responsible for the tragic program, according to the first segment of an official report. All of the ATF figures still work for the agency.
The retirement of Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) is leaving a coveted Senate seat up for grabs. In a run-off election today, which — many Texans are promoted to quip — has forced them to decide “whom to vote against,” the Lone Star State’s Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst (R) faces off against Ted Cruz (R), former Texas Solicitor General. Cruz, if elected, would be the state’s first Latino senator.
Perhaps the biggest lie of this election year, and the one likely to be repeated the most often, is that the income of "the rich" is going up, while other people's incomes are going down. If you listen to Barack Obama, you are bound to hear this lie repeatedly.
First he tried to take super-sized sodas out of the mouths of adults. Now New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to take formula out of the mouths of babies. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, with the enthusiastic backing of the mayor, is strongly encouraging — though not yet requiring — city hospitals to lock down all infant formula in an effort to convince new mothers to breastfeed their babies.
What is certain is that an implosion in Europe's debt crisis is reaching the point of inevitability in much the same manner that the housing bubble came to a head and burst in the United States, but though no one knows when the debt crisis will come to a head, events are happening in September that may push the eurozone over a fiscal cliff.
