The John Birch Society
The future of Egypt in the aftermath of last year’s “Arab Spring” is being written by the dominant Islamist organization in that nation, the Muslim Brotherhood. Since the fall of the Mubarak government in February 2011, the Muslim Brotherhood has been steadily establishing itself as the center of power in the new Egypt. In the process, the organization is now preparing to break a crucial promise that its leadership made last year: the Muslim Brotherhood is now seeking to install one of its own as president of Egypt.
Law enforcement agencies around the nation are increasingly turning to tracking cell phones in surveillance operations, and, according to a recent report by the ACLU, they are doing so largely without the benefit of a warrant. According to the secular legal group, many of the more than 200 police departments that responded to the ACLU survey on their use of such tracking said that their officers do not bother with a warrant to access such investigative resources.
When President Obama spoke before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee some weeks ago, he admonished those who engaged in “loose talk of war” about Iran. Apparently, his secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton, didn’t get the memo.
Solar Trust of America, an energy firm based in Oakland, California, declared bankruptcy on April 2, fewer than 10 months after breaking ground on a project near Blythe, California, that was to be the world’s largest solar power energy project built on public lands. In its bankruptcy filing, the company claims to have assets of up to $10 million. Those assets, however, are dubious, consisting primarily of the Blythe project and another project in Riverside County, California, neither of which has gotten off the ground. Meanwhile, its liabilities may run as high as $100 million.
The Obama administration wants Congress to grant it even broader authority and more funding to send U.S. troops on missions around the world dealing with everything from terror and narcotics to supporting national governments facing opposition and law enforcement operations, senior Defense Department officials told a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee. And lawmakers seemed happy to comply.
A street preacher who has handed out Bibles at Minneapolis’s “gay pride festival” for more than 15 years is suing the city’s Park Board for allowing the event’s organizers to relegate him to a “pride-free” zone. This year’s Pride Fest — which is definitely not what traditionalists would describe as a family-friendly event — is scheduled for June 23 and 24 in the Loring Park, a well-known center for homosexual activity.
Reaching into President Obama’s 14-page, 7,200 word luncheon speech to the Associated Press on Tuesday, some conservative observers took umbrage at a few of his choicest and more outrageous characterizations of Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget bill, while leaving much behind.
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won the Wisconsin, Maryland, and District of Columbia primaries April 3, easily besting second-place Rick Santorum in Wisconsin and Maryland. Former Pennsylvania Senator Santorum didn't win ballot access in the District of Columbia, where Romney won 70 percent of the vote over second place Ron Paul (12 percent) in that primary.
In a new ploy to push backdoor amnesty, the Obama administration is quietly working to curb the deportation of illegal immigrants by granting "unlawful presence waivers," for which to qualify, an illegal immigrant must be a relative of an American citizen.
President Obama hosted Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Washington, D.C., this week for the so-called “North American Leaders Summit,” announcing further integration of the three governments across a broad range of fields. The meeting, however, fueled deep suspicion and concern among advocates of national sovereignty and the U.S. Constitution.
