"A whole fifty years of decency doesn't count because of one remark?" asks Jackie Mason with theatrical -- albeit entirely sincere -- incredulity in remarks directed at Mel Gibson's critics.

Wielding his weapons-grade wit with devastating effect, Mason blasts away the hypocrisy and opportunism behind the escalating attacks on Gibson.

Like Ben Stein, another politically (and religiously) conservative Jew who has come to Gibson's defense, Mason points out that the actor/director's outburst was entirely out of character for someone whose admittedly flawed life had displayed no previous inclination toward bigotry or hatred of any kind. Like Stein, Mason focuses on Gibson's admitted difficulty overcoming the affliction of alcoholism. He also dismisses the facile "in vino veritas" school of thought, to wit: freed of his inhibitions by booze, Gibson unbosomed himself of his truest and deepest sentiments. True, alcohol does lower one's inhibitions, Mason allows, but it also leaves one vulnerable to delusions as well.
