Although Congress is planning on adjourning by late September or early October, you still have time to influence your senators and rep regarding the following three very important issues pending in Congress:- Oppose Senator Obama’s Global Poverty Act (S. 2433) to commit the United States to fulfill the UN Millennium Development Goals. This bill is likely to come up for a vote in the Senate before adjournment because the Democratic Party platform has indirectly endorsed it, and more importantly, the United Nations will be holding a meeting on September 25 to get more nations on board with these UN antipoverty goals.
- Oppose the LOST Treaty. The Bush administration has strongly recommended that the Senate ratify the blank check for UN control of all aspects of the earth’s oceans and seas, known as the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST). It could come up for a vote at any time.
- Support legislation to help lower gas prices by unlocking our domestic energy resources. This will continue to be a hot issue in both houses of Congress until adjournment. This is a good time to support the removal of regulatory roadblocks to the development of our domestic energy resources, such as oil, nuclear power, and coal.
