It took six ballots, but delegates to the Libertarian Party's national convention finally nominated Bob Barr as the party's choice for president.
The former GOP congressman from Georgia's famed 7th district defected to the Libertarian Party in December of 2006. Libertarian odds makers are betting that his presence on the presidential ballot will pull votes from disaffected Republican voters who are certain a John McCain presidency will do nothing to reduce the size and scope of government.
Key to the Barr nomination over Mary Ruwart was the contingent of delegates at the convention supporting real-life odds maker Wayne Allyn Root. Root is longtime Republican supporter and donor who, like Barr, also recently defected to the Libertarian Party as a small l "libertarian Republican".
Barr and Ruwart traded first place showings on the first five ballots while Root finished out of contention in the number three spot. When Root finally conceded and threw his support to Barr, Barr took the nomination on the deciding 6th ballot. Barr then returned Root's favor and asked the convention to nominate Root as the party's vice presidential candidate. Convention delegates obliged giving Root a 287-257 victory over medical marijuana activist Steve Kubby.
With Barr as the Libertarian candidate and Pastor Chuck Baldwin as the Constitution Party candidate, the putative GOP presidential pick John McCain now has to replace both non-war mongering Christians and libertarians in the coalition that was the Republican Party. Look for the Manchurian Candidate McCain and his globalist handlers to make a dramatic counter move to go after the Reagan Democrats in key states like Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky.
Don't be surprised if the person who has tried to destroy our country under banners like McCain-Feingold and McCain-Kennedy makes his next banner McCain-Lieberman.
*Unlike other privately incorporated political parties like the DNC and RNC, the Libertarian Party does not shift the costs of its candidate selection process to taxpayers through a primary election scheme.
