Those Paranoid Founders and Their Fear of Standing Armies

Distinguishing America from banana republics used to be easy.

Soldier with civiliansIn the former, citizens walked freely, without interference from soldiers; in the latter, soldiers patrolled freely, without interference from citizens. But that distinction is dying. A federal government that now rivals third-world despots when it comes to torturing folks or imprisoning them without trial no longer scruples to turn its military on its own citizens. Accordingly, the Pentagon hopes to deploy 20,000 American troops for domestic duty by 2011.

No need to fear a military dictatorship, though: “Pentagon officials” assured the Washington Post that these units will only “help state and local officials respond to a nuclear terrorist attack or other domestic catastrophe.” And how do the Feds define “other domestic catastrophe”? Very broadly.
In 2006, Congress passed and President George Bush signed the “John W. Warner Defense Authorization Act.” Lurking among the legislation’s 591 pages was a provision that authorized the president to declare martial law for “emergencies” ranging from another 9/11 to an outbreak of measles. Section 1076 said: “the President may employ the armed forces... to... restore public order” should “a natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition” strike.
Congress has since repealed the Act, replacing it with the “National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008.” So Bush resorted to one of his infamous signing statements, alleging that “Provisions” of the new legislation “purport to impose requirements that could inhibit the President's ability to carry out his constitutional obligations…. The executive branch shall construe such provisions in a manner consistent with the constitutional authority of the President.”
In other words, President Bush craves the limitless power Section 1076 handed him, so he’s sticking with it.
Meanwhile, American troops will learn how torespond” to such “threats” as “pandemic flu, a terrorist attack, hurricane, earthquake and catastrophic chemical release.” But just as the government stretches the definition of “catastrophe” to include storms and the sniffles, its idea of “response” differs from ours.
You may think that survivors of a terrorist attack need family, food, a doctor. Unfortunately, soldiers carry M-16’s, not meals and medicine. And they don’t heal: they kill people and break things. We saw how the military “responds” to a natural disaster when it forced residents of New Orleans from their homes at gunpoint. Anyone up for having the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team, lately returned from “patrolling [Iraq] in full battle rattle,” rescue him after an earthquake?
An army’s purpose is to abuse people. That’s why Americans – and their British ancestors – abhorred a professional, or standing one. England’s Saxons learned this lesson during the Norman invasion when soldiers under William the Conqueror devastated their country, then forced the victims to house their conquerors and pay taxes.
The Saxons contrasted these horrors with the behavior of their own militias – a difference James Madison articulated centuries later: an army “subdu[es] the force, of the people” while also producing “debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.” Militias, by contrast, exist solely for self-defense. People arming themselves only when directly threatened and only to protect their homes have little enthusiasm for roistering about other countries, plundering and attacking folks who aren’t endangering them.
No wonder Madison and the founding generation loved militias but feared a standing army as one of liberty’s “most dreaded enemies.” When an army pillages abroad, government has all the excuse wanted to raise taxes while tarring those who object as unpatriotic. And when it stays home, the army is handy for suppressing dissent.
The American colonists suffered both these calamities. The British Army battled French forces for control of North America from 1754 to 1763. Colonists died in these battles and endured retaliatory raids on their farms and towns. They also watched their taxes rise. When they protested, most famously with the Boston Tea Party, the British government dispatched troops to North America once again. This time the Redcoats would fight their fellow citizens, not French soldiers.
Lacking an income tax, government’s favorite method of extortion was tariffs. Controlling a port with a garrison and some cannon let customs officers monitor all incoming and outgoing goods. Not surprisingly, the colonists became expert smugglers. That soon had Redcoats stalking their streets, searching for contraband and rebels.
This infuriated eighteenth-century Americans. Patrolling soldiers infuriated nineteenth-century ones, too, during the Union Army’s reign over Southerners after the Civil War. So egregious was the exploitation that Congress passed the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. This punished officials who sicced soldiers on citizens with fines and even imprisonment. It reinforced the earlier Insurrection Act of 1807 (which had prohibited the Feds from calling out the armed forces to quash rebellion) even as it codified the Anglo-American tradition that armies do not enforce domestic law.
Tragically, such enforcement no longer outrages most Americans. Indeed, we welcome it, so enthusiastically that we pay for it. We do make one concession to our anti-militaristic heritage: we euphemize the officers stalking our streets in search of contraband and rebels as “police.”
Cops first appeared in American cities midway through the nineteenth century. Today’s version performs the functions the British Army did in the 1770’s: they quell protest and look for infractions of the government’s rules. No more waiting for victims of burglary or assault to report the crime as colonial constables had: Redcoats and cops actively ferret out scofflaws to fine them and increase the government’s revenues. Cops may not collect customs duties anymore as the Redcoats did, but they do write traffic tickets.
They are also heavily armed, far more so than almost any taxpayer. As the government continues to criminalize innocuous behavior, as it legislates against our pleasures and prosperity, it increases both the number of lawbreakers and our incentives to rebel. And so it must also increase cops’ firepower.
The Founding Fathers’ hatred of standing armies and their warnings against these “most dreaded enemies” of freedom certainly apply to the police, particularly as police forces have been incrementally nationalized in our larger urban centers. And there’s another danger: armed cops patrolling neighborhoods, “serving” and “protecting” us, have accustomed Americans to standing armies.
Indeed, most are horrified at the suggestion that we abolish police departments. Nor did they so much as blanch when Section 1076 turned Bush into the semblance of a military dictator.
Will they rouse themselves once an outbreak of flu sends soldiers rampaging through their homes, rounding up the healthy for compulsory vaccinations while consigning the sick to quarantine camps?
Then again, protest won’t matter at that point.

control & greed

"Your papers, please."

There are few new ideas out there on how to overtake a country. Simply read up (Google this) on Mussolini, Hitler, Pinochet and their merry bunch of henchmen. There are many similarities going on right now in America.

A good read on this is a book by Naomi Wolf titled, The End of America. A good read if you can handle it.

US media is owned by military companies such as GE and Westinghouse.....

Why would the media and government lie about 911? Sure they lied about WMD’s, torture, dumping depleted uranium used in bombs over the entire country of Iraq, rendition flights….but why would they lie about 911? Sure the media and government lied about outing agents names, actions taken during Katrina, lied about the killing of thousands of people and 10’s of thousands of personal pets and animals following Katrina, retaliations against attorney generals for political reasons, threatening Congress, blackmailing Senators, destroying all tapes and transcripts of the days and week following Katrina…but why would they lie about some planes crashing?

Eliminated habeas corpus, installed and supported Blackwater, “lost” trillions of dollars at the Pentagon, privatized and sold-out the entire US infrastructure, illegally used funds meant to “rebuild” Iraq, immunity for telecoms and pharmaceutical that they ordered to commit crimes…but why would the media and government lie about a plane crash? Sure they lied about the massacres in Haiti, stole the elections in 2000 and 2004, detonated the levees in New Orleans 2 days after Katrina left, misquoted world leaders to produce fear. Lied about water contaminations, toxic exposures, global warming, immigrant roundups, number of deaths of Iraqi and Afghanistan civilians, number of killed US soldiers, pillaging of our entire US financial banking with corporate give outs and bailouts, secretly changing executive orders however they wish, medical associations in charge of CIA torture…..but why would the media and government lie about 4 planes crashing at 4 locations on 911?

Pillaged Billions from the US education system with No child left behind, encouraged massive real estate fraud through deregulation and zero oversight, deposits nuclear waste on US soil from foreign countries by “redefining” what waste is, covers-up Halliburton’s selling of nuclear technology, eliminates protections for whistleblowers, hires out torture worldwide to private companies, allows for the greatest crop of heroin to grow in Afghanistan, and refuses to say where trillions have gone within the Homeland Security agency….though why would they lie about planes crashing? Largest number of felons ever hired at the white house, intentionally destroyed Iraq’s water and energy systems, continually destroys labor unions and environmental causes, brutalizes and tortures protesters or “homegrown enemy combatants”, highest number of dual citizens in top key government positions in US history, caused the entire US financial collapse from “Subprime” mortgages which was nothing more than Bush Sr’s S&L real estate scandal on steroids….though why lie about 911 and a couple of “planes”?

Threatens countries such as Paraguay, Pakistan, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Venezuela with military action if they don’t play ball, murders and threatens Supreme Court justices to open up seats, destroys ALL verifiable evidence of 911 and never allows for any testing, violently refuses to have an investigation of 911 for almost 2 years then gets to decide who will be on the panel, murders thousands of witnesses and legally threatens many more who wish to come forward regarding 911 especially firefighters from the Pentagon and FBI agents who said there were no planes…..though why would the media and government lie about 911? Spy on their own citizens illegally, murder journalists worldwide, eliminate tort reform, uses child wards to test AIDS drugs, destroy parental rights, manipulate and threaten science worldwide, allow media to legally lie with new laws, install puppet Governors such as Arnold in California (met with Ken Lay just before “recall”), demolish labor laws worldwide…though why would they lie about a plane crash?

I left out over 985 more examples. Would anyone else like to add to this list and explain why they would never lie about some planes crashing?

New World Order is run by Atheist

As we learn more about 911 (500 Architects and Engineers calling for new investigation)we realize the sinister plans of the New World Order. These people are clearly athiest, probably FreeMasons, as no Christian would put our country through such a sinister power grab. They may even have ties to old Nazi Germani.
Obama better act quick to end their plan, as people like Obama have no part in their community. The gradual progression to a fascist state is quickening.
God Bless the JBS. Keep up the good fight.

Persecuted

I was born just before Nazi Germany started up under Hitler. I lived under a National Socialist Police State. I came to America at age 11 with my persecuted parents to escape this. My grandparents who stayed behind were transported to concentration camps and died there. Therefore I know from personal experience how this works.

Americans do not know how bad this can be and should work hard, by joining the John Birch Society to prevent this from happening in the USA.

Recent events make no sence without historical perspective

But you not going back far enough, you need to go back to the Barbary wars.
You've all heard the Marine Corpse motto but few know what it means. We are in a Holy War,
The problem is not the Right wing Christians who know this to be true,
But the Secular Humanists and their Politically Correct, Historically
ignorant policies. Just as John Birch was sacrificed, along with China to
the Communists, So We could be entangled in a never ending series of police actions
the Elitist Social engineers could use to manipulate the populous of the
world. Simultaneously culling the populations of Patriotic warriors who are willing
to fight for what they believe. American troops today are being sacrificed in a
1300 year old war Christians have been loosing for generations. Marxists and Muslims
have many common traits; they will live peacefully among you until they hold
enough numbers to impose their will upon you.
If Macarthur was allowed to finish the job in WWII, We would live in a different world.
If our troops had been allowed to fight in Korea, Viet Nam the same way they did in WWII,
We would live in a different world. If our troops would be allowed to drop the pretences,
and Kick some tail in the gulf, we would live in a different world.
If we are ever going to stop this one world Movement, It will happen by showing them
that no matter how varied our individual interests, when called to arms, We Stand together
until nobody is left standing. And if they insist on guiding us into a one world government,
It will only happen when every citizen of the world enjoys the Same God given Freedoms
we enjoy under our constitution, Not on their Marxist terms.

In defense of the topic at hand and for those posting and commenting.

SGTFON.
You said and I quote.
"are you all really this stupid?
Am just wondering if you are really this stupid as you seem to be from your posts and comments? if you feel so strongly, take up arms and do something about it, I will meet you in the street, and no fear, I will only wound you so you can exercise your right to a speedy trial"

Had I been brought up the way you have been and believed the same way, then I might have had said the same. But seeing how I was not and solely by the grace of God I was not an am not so ignorant.

After reading your post SGTFON I am led to ask you the very question you asked us " ARE YOU REALLY THIS STUPID?" Really I'm just wondering.

There is a reason you are free and enjoy your freedoms.
If the founding fathers had not tolerated the tyranical abuses committed by their home country through the taxation and sending standing armies over here to control us and make us into slaves.

I thank God for Godly and moral men an women who saw this problem and took up arms against such tyrany.

Judging from your comment about us taking up arms and doing some thing about it, that you would meet us in the streets and only wound us so we could have our speedy trail. It is from that I gather a few things about you.1 your lack of education. 2 that your must be for more government and clearly not see a problem here.

If there needs to be another revolution so be it I will happily pledge my Life,Fourtunes and Sacred Honour to this cuase as did the founding fathers.
If there should be some reason to go to the streets then I'll meet you there if you stand against me and the cause of freedom.

My previous comment continued.

I must apologize for not getting my full train of thought out there, I often tend to leave words or even entire sentences out. So here's what I meant to say.

There is a reason you are free and enjoy your freedoms.
It is because the founding fathers did not tolerate the tyranical abuses committed by their home country through the taxation, lack of representation and sending standing armies over here to control us and make us into slaves.
Those brave people stood up for freedom and it's because of them we are free.

RE: SGTFON

are you really as stupid as you appear to be in your comment? or do you really deserve to have your head put on a pike without the right to a speedy trial in one of your so-called courts?

Cats and Dogs...

I am a self-proclaimed Godless Communist and am shocked that I found this piece on the JBS website. I thought everyone on the right was in on the whole thing. I thought the ultimate goal of this power grab was to destroy the non-believers. I'm happy to hear otherwise. Maybe the Bush administration has pushed things to the point that people of different beliefs and political views can stop squabbling over the distractions and come together to fight the real threats to our liberties.

Happy Holidays to All and a Prosperous New Year!

Scott
