From the East
by Hal Shurtleff, Regional Field Director
For the third year in a row, JBS had a presence at the National Convention of State Legislators convention. In addition to having an information table, The New American was on hand with staff member Jim Capo which enabled us to interview some key legislators and other opinion molders on videotape and sit in on some informative sessions.
This year’s information table focused on several issues including the 10th Amendment Resolutions and the Con-Con. Several hundred copies of “Beware of Article V: The Con-Con Temptation” DVD were distributed to elected officials and other opinion molders. Only a few of the legislators were aware of the renewed drive for a Con-Con but were instinctively against one. In addition to the DVDs, we distributed the new booklet Restoring the Rights of the States and the People, copies of the U.S. Constitution, various copies of The New American and the Dollars & $ense and Overview of America DVDs.
We received many favorable responses including a surprising one from a member of the Nigerian Parliament, who, after reading our sign supporting family and freedom, loudly exclaimed that the U.S. needs organizations like ours.
Local members who manned the table and helped to organize the event included Al Zeller, Mill Affleck, Beverly McCormick, Chuck Baker, Jackie Ahern, Mike Malloy, Donna Ward, and Fred Salika. Many other area members donated funds to help make this event possible.
Information table at Boston’s historic Boston Common:
July 4th was a busy day for Boston area Birchers who manned an information table at historic Boston Common. The theme of this year’s table was “Honoring the Lives of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.” A free copy of the U.S. Constitution was offered to anyone who would take a 10-question quiz on the Constitution. Some folks taking the quiz were humbled but all were thankful and left with a copy of the Constitution, an Overview of America DVD, and a keener appreciation of our nation’s organic documents. Members who worked the table included Jim and Ken Eckland, Jim Carroll, James Boggie, Mark Fields, and Nathaniel Shurtleff.
