by James F. Fitzgerald, Director of Field Activities On December 15, longtime amnesty advocate Rep. Solomon Ortiz (D-Texas) introduced legislation that would effectively grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in the United States. It was immediately co-sponsored by over 90 other House members. The proposed legislation entitled “Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009” (H.R. 4321) claims the number of undocumented (meaning illegal) aliens to be 11-12 million. But the real total is more like 18-20 million. According to one of the co-sponsors, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), the bill “will be progressive, it will be expansive, it will be compassionate and it will be comprehensive.” What this Congressman did not say is that it will also be hugely expensive. The cost will be many billions of dollars that will further weaken the dollar and additionally harm an already sinking economy. But there are more dangerous features of this bill. Illegal aliens and foreign guest workers take jobs from American citizens and drive down wages in an economy already saddled with the highest unemployment in decades. With at least 15 million Americans unemployed, adding many of the 18-20 million illegals to their number will impact the dreary economic climate even more. We know that many hospitals have closed in California and elsewhere because of having to treat illegal immigrants who don’t pay for their care. And this is only one of the many problems brought on by lax immigration policies. Now it appears a new healthcare proposal will become law and, because of it, many more medical facilities will be overwhelmed. What will be the impact on the schools? The proposal being entertained that will grant amnesty to millions, will also require providing free in-state college tuition for illegals. In primary and high schools throughout the country, bilingual teachers, books and curriculum will be required. Amnesty threatens our national security and solvency because it will not be possible to conduct a comprehensive background check on millions of applicants who will surely overwhelm the various government agencies. Many law enforcement officials already face drug dealers from Latin America, and the gangs that have been spawned by the drug trade are a serious problem facing police agencies throughout our country. This problem will increase because this bill offer more visas for workers and their relatives and eliminates local enforcement of federal immigration laws. There are 92 House members co-sponsoring this 700-page bill. It is noteworthy that virtually all of these amnesty-backing representatives can be accurately described as radical leftists who seem bent on imposing a collectivist system on our nation. The CFR-controlled media and numerous government officials who regularly support and implement dangerous measures such as H.R. 4321 would consider passage of this legislation a significant victory in their drive to create a North American Union and, ultimately, a world government. Members of The John Birch Society must exert maximum effort, and also stimulate help from the many friends we have made in other concerned organizations, to see that this bill is not enacted. All should contact their congressmen and strongly urge opposition to any form of legislation granting amnesty to illegal aliens, especially this new threat contained in H.R. 4321. In addition, share information about this measure with your prospects who may need a bit more incentive to join JBS and get involved in the fight to save our country. Use some or all of the many tools listed to educate those who have little or no knowledge of the dangers posed by this bill, and any similar bill that would legalize undocumented immigrants.
