President's Corner by John F. McManus, President, The John Birch Society In the February 2009 JBS Bulletin, we reported that the neoconservative and Establishment-favored Heritage Foundation had conducted an extensive investigation into claims about plans to create a NAFTA Superhighway and a North American Union. Well-funded Heritage went, for instance, to the Washington Post and its own "policy experts" and eventually concluded that these claims were "baseless." But there is plenty of evidence to back up what The John Birch Society and The New American have stated about this threat to our nation's sovereignty. Now there is even more. On June 3, 2009, several officials from the United States, Canada and Mexico met north of the U.S. border in Québec City to further the work of what is sometimes labeled "the North American Supercorridor Coalition." (See the nearby reproduction of a photo appearing in the June 4th issue of the Des Moines Register.) Iowa's Governor Chet Culver and Vermont's Governor James Douglas are shown as U.S. participants at this gathering. There can be no doubt that this "Supercorridor Coalition" is working toward the very goal of creating a North American Union and building its associated NAFTA Superhighway. The productive work already done by JBS members in challenging this step toward world government has slowed its momentum. But, as the poet said, "the enemy never sleeps." Perhaps sending a photocopy of this portion of the Bulletin complete with the photo and its caption showing that the claims we have made in the past are far from "baseless" will convince some doubting Thomases that this threat does exist. Iowa members should certainly contact Senator Charles Grassley who has repeatedly insisted that there are no plans to create a North American Union or build a superhighway connecting the three North American nations. Letters accompanied by the photo and its caption could also be sent to the Heritage Foundation (214 Massachusetts Avenue NE, Washington DC 20002) with a request that this organization do some further investigation. We must continue to be on guard against any effort to cancel U.S. sovereignty. And the drive to create a North American Union is certainly part of this treacherous plan. |
