New Chapter Leader of the Springville Utah John Birch Society

Dear Friends,

On Tuesday, August 11, 2009, I was asked by Bliss Tew, Regional Field Director, to become the Chapter Leader of the Springville, Utah Chapter of the John Birch Society.

I was somewhat unprepared for his offer and very uncertain about accepting the assignment. I have been interested in the John Birch Society (JBS) since the 1970s. I had many questions and I finally wrote a letter Ezra Taft Benson, a supporter of the JBS. He replied to my letter dated 9 Aug. 1972 and told me:

“I have said publicly that that I consider the John Birch Society the most effective secular organization in the nation in our fight against creeping Socialism and Godless Communism….”

I was not then able to find a Chapter near my home to join but some 12 years later I was re-introduced to the JBS by my friend John Paulson. I attended several months of meetings, ordered there magazine "The New America" and studied it and any other material I could get at the meetings, I asked a lot of questions and prayer. After all of this I have come to the conclusion that it is still the organization that President Benson told me about and not the organization that the media plays it up to be.

So, what else was I to do? I join the JBS and have comfortable until Bliss talked to me. I did not feel comfortable taking over the leadership of the Springville, Utah Chapter. However, after much persuasion and encouragement, Bliss talked me into it and I accepted the assignment, against my wives best judgment. I was assurance that he and others would be available to help me, and John Paulson, a veteran in the JBS movement, was asked to be my assistant.

Over the past few days I have given this much thought, study and prayer about my new assignment. I read and re-read the Core Principles of the John Birch Society and discovered that they were part of my personal value system and found it easy to embrace them fully.

I am now excited about my new challenge. I had to give up some other projects I was working on, and enjoyed them very much, but I feel I will find the same enjoyment and satisfaction in the continued development as the Chapter Leader of the Springville Utah Chapter of the John Birch Society.
