Unbelievable! The situation was handled poorly by both the state trooper and the paramedic. However, the trooper(s) involved should be demoted and permanently relieved of duty for unnecessarily delaying an emergency medical transport over a minor traffic violation.

Proper protocol would have been for the paramedic/ambulance driver to radio or phone the authorities and inform them of the route, final destination, and cause for emergency. It is not unusual for an officer to be waiting at the hospital after an EMS arrival to ticket an ambulance driver who is guilty of being reckless or causing an accident.

Had the incident resulted in the death of the ambulance patient due to the delay in immediate medical treatment, the trooper(s) could have been charged with felony criminal negligence. The trooper(s) already committed a felony in impeding and obstructing a medical emergency vehicle during the commission of its duty.

The entire incident further proves the need for regularly scheduled competency tests throughout the ranks of law enforcement.
