Part 6 in a multipart series examing solutions for our ailing economy, presented by Art Thompson, CEO of The John Birch Society.

Hiring BillboardWhile it may not seem that illegal immigration has anything to do with economic solutions and recovery, there are several things which must be taken into account when discussing the full scope of what recovery means.

If in massive numbers, illegal immigration constitutes an invasion, it doesn’t matter the reason for the immigration. From the Visigothic invasion of the Roman Empire, to the illegal immigration into the United States, they are state-changing events. A country must have control of its borders, who may enter, and the flow of capital into it, or the country will cease to exist.

Subsidizing illegal immigrants’ medical care, schooling, and housing is a billions of dollars per year proposition. The burdens on the hospitals have been extraordinary and the costs staggering. In California in 2004, the cost for unreimbursed health care was estimated at $1.4 billion. That's a large amount of money, but it becomes larger when the costs from other states are added to the total. Those costs then become a significant drag on the economy, but in real terms, it means less money in the pockets of American citizens. The same applies to the schools. And the lion’s share of the financial burden is carried by local property owners and subsidized by federal tax monies. Much of the problem of mortgage failures was due to enticing illegals who did not understand the ensuing obligations, to take out subprime home loans which failed. Subprime lenders made a special effort to attract immigrants, legal or illegal, into taking these loans, as columnist Michelle Malkin has pointed out, with ads proclaiming: "'Sin verificacion de ingresos ! Sin verificacion de documento !”'— which loosely translates as, ‘Income tax forms are not required, nor are immigration papers.'"

Says Malkin with regard to the economic crisis: "There’s one giant paternal elephant in the room that has slipped notice: How illegal immigration, crime-enabling banks, and open-borders Bush policies fueled the mortgage crisis."

It is interesting to note that by and large the same forces manipulating the panic of 2008 are those who welcome the massive immigration. What we are witnessing is a deliberate plan to change the United States into a socialist, controlled state. Massive immigration is part of the plan and that is why our would-be rulers have no interest in stopping it. It is important to note: the immigrants are, by and large, not the villains. They are being victimized and used by ruling elitist internationalists for ends that are not their own. The real villains are those who have used and continue to use illegal immigration as a wedge to force changes on the American people.

The issue of massive immigration, the mortgage meltdown, and the attempted merger of North America into one nation are all intertwined. For detailed information of the North American Union, read The New Americam magazine's, “Merger in the Making” issue.

Another very important aspect of recovery is understanding the human toll and the resulting effect on the economy of illegal immigration. While the average illegal immigrant is a worker displaced by internationalist economic policies like NAFTA, there is a very real criminal component utilizing the dislocations caused by massive immigration to cover crimes of every variety, from drug trafficing to murder. This does not count for  irresponsible driving habits that also take a toll of American citizens. This writer has two friends in two separate incidents that were killed by errant aliens. In both case, the aliens fled across the border to avoid vehicular manslaughter. Some indication of the devastation caused to American families can be found in this list of tragedies.

The cost of lives is also an economic minus; those Americans who lost their lives as a result of illegal immigration would have contributed materially to the productivity of our economy, just as they would have contributed to the richness of their families and to the richness of American culture.

Our prisons overflow with inmates, the a large number of whom are illegal aliens. The negative impact on the economy, both in lost wealth by our citizens through crime, and additionally through the taxes to support the justice system and house criminals in prison should be plainly seen.

Many are unaware of the crimes being committed by illegal aliens to intimidate Black Americans, forcing them to move from their neighborhoods, opening them up for illegal occupation. This is often perpetrated by vicious street gangs. This causes further stress on local economies relative to businesses, housing prices, moving costs, and mortgages. It is usually a net loss for those forced out.

Many libertarians and businessmen feel that they should be able to hire illegals since it is cheap labor, and cheap labor is a boon to the economy. But this is not true if the wages and Social Security payments end up in the illegals’ homeland. It may be good for the employer, but not the economy overall.

Lastly, massive immigration leads to Balkanization and the lack of assimilation. This is a powder keg ready to be lit by those who wish to rule. The Aztlan movement, the desire to make the American Southwest part of Mexico, among Latinos is only one example. If this powder keg is ignited, imagine what destruction and effect this will have on the economy.

Other legal massive immigration is also taking place under the auspices of the Federal government and it is relatively unknown to the American taxpayer. Tens of thousands of foreigners are being brought into the United States and these thousands are being subsidized by the taxpayers. The Hmong and Burmese refugees are only two examples that are being settled all over the country.

We likewise are seeing crime syndicates composed of immigrants growing in major cities among the numbers of Russians and Chinese who have come into our country over the past 15 years. It is serious and a good deal of evidence that these mafia-types are controlled by individuals in their mother countries.

Crime in any form takes a heavy economic toll.

This is not to say that we should build a wall around the United States and prevent any and all immigration. It is only to recognize the fact that in the U.S. today, immigration is no longer under control. As a result, immigrants and American citizens alike suffer. The immigration problem has grown so big, that unless it is solved, it will prove an impediment to economic recovery and an obstacle to future economic growth.
