You can use this as a Letter to your Editor to educate people on the Smart Cards! Due to opposition of the Real ID card among various states, backdoor steps are being taken to issue Real IDs called "Smart Cards" to the elderly, employees and people with disabilities or special healthcare needs. Police and employers are marketing this "surveillance" program as promoting the quality of your life and recognizing your needs. The elderly are accepting this free program with open arms because local responders can quickly see in their database that their home is a "Smart Card" home and they can quickly access all sorts of information. The Smart Card can contain contextual data like bank accounts, credit card histories, legal judgments, child custody, marriage or divorce records, plus criminal database records on local/state/federal levels. The program definitions state that the S-Card is a "universal" form meaning it will integrate with various data banks as well as cooperate with inter-agencies in the sharing of your information, with a view to eventually centralizing the information on American citizens. This S-Card is actually the latest "Big Brother" police state measure emanating from the Bush administration, with virtually no press coverage. It's called NSPD 59 (HSPD24) entitled, "Biometrics for Identification and Screening to Enhance National Security." According to one recent article, the NSPD is actually directed against U.S. citizens and was adopted without public debate or Congressional approval. The Smart Card may be convenient, but it isn't freedom. Its relevant procedures have far-reaching implications on the private lives of U.S. citizens and it actually invades the privacy of every legitimate American citizen. It will tip our society into a genuine surveillance society completely alien to our values. I urge you to reject this form of ID that one day could eventually lead to a mandatory RFID implant in humans. |
