The Freedom Index is a Congressional Scorecard based on the U.S. Constitution which is published by The New American Magazine.. The index extracts congressmen's votes and rates each congressman and senator based on their adherence to constitutional principles of limited government, fiscal resposibility, national sovereignty, and a traditional policy of avoiding foreign entanglements. Here we will report on some of the votes of Georgia Senators Johhny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss and Congressman Paul Broun of the Georgia 10th Congressional District. The following information is extracted from The Freedom Index published October 27, 2008 on the 110th Congress: Both Senator Isakson and Chambliss voted against The Fiscal 2009 Budget Resolution (Senate Concurrent Resolution 70) which establishes budget targets increasing fedeeral spending over the previous year. This is good because inflation and the national debt are skyrocketing as Congress persistently disregards constituional limits on spending. Both Senator Isakson and Senator Chambliss voted for H.R. 6304, the bill to revamp the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which would allow warrantless electronic surveillance, including monitoring telephone conversations and e-mails, including some which involve American citizens. This is bad because warrantless searches are a violation of the Fourth Amendment, which protects Americans against unreasonable searches and seizures, and requires that any searches be conducted only upon issuace of a warrant under conditions of probable cause. Both Senator Isakson and Senator Chambliss voted for the Bailout Bill known as The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. The bill authorizes the Treasury Department to use $700 billion of taxpayer money to purchase troubled mortgage-related securities from banks and other financial-related institutions. This bill has greatly increased the national debt and monetary inflation by forcing taxpayers to pay the price for the failures of private financial institutions. Senator Chambliss received an over-all rating of 52 out of a possible 100 while Senator Isakson received a rating of 54. Congressman Paul Broun received a rating of 79 out of a possible 100, the highest rating of any of the 13 Georgia Congressmen. Notably, he voted against the Fiscal 2009 Budget Resolution and the Bank bailout bill. To his discredit, he voted for warrantless searches provided for in H.R. 6304. Voters should let Senators Isakson and Chambliss and Congressman Broun know how they feel about their votes in washington.
