Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) introduced an amendment that would save taxpayers $12.5 million this year and millions in years to come by taking it out of the hands of global warming alarmists.
A Congressman who wants to save money, instead of spend it, criticizes global warming and the UN…and it’s not Ron Paul? It may sound unheard of but Blaine Luetkemeyer of Missouri on July 7 introduced legislation that would save taxpayers money by taking it out of the hands of global warming alarmists. Resolution 617 (H. Res. 617), an amendment to the Department of State Foreign Operations and Related Programs Act (H.R.3081), would cut $12.5 million allocated to the UN‘s International Panel on Climate Control (IPCC) for research on global warming.
"We all know that the UN is incompetent when it comes to spending money, and that is why American taxpayers should not be forking over millions more to one of its organizations that not only is in need of significant reform but is engaged in dubious scientific quests,” said Luetkemeyer.
"Folks in Missouri and across the country are tired of this never ending government spending spree, and my goal is to deliver some of our people’s hard-earned money back into their pocketbooks instead of spending it on international junk science,” he added.
As the press release from the congressman’s website and the John Birch Society have pointed out, there are more than a number of scientists who disagree that global warming could be caused by man, 700 of whom signed a statement expressing this very sentiment. With 2008 being one the coolest years this century it would seem that nature concurs with the 700 scientists who opposed the IPCC’s findings instead of the 52 scientists that authored it.
Although serious other amendments to the bill would need to be made, such as withdrawal of foreign aid, before it could be supportable from and constitutional perspective, Luetkemeyer’s amendment is a step in the right direction. And his sentiments about global warming and the United Nations are very refreshing to hear from someone leading our country. Perhaps some in government are finally waking up.
