Consider the implications of his grand plan. In a style typical of dictators, he is preempting the communications into every school in the nation. He has not sought the permission of parents or local school boards. He will not sign in at the office to get clearance and a visitor badge as everyone else must do. As a parent, I expect the schools to notify me in writing if a controversial person or group would be making any kind of presentation. I could then decide whether to keep my child home, or ask that he be sent to the library to read during that time. But Barack Obama, with one huge broadcast, will dismiss the rights of everyone, ignore laws, and kick dust on the Constitution. Parents will not be warned — except by a few like myself, Jeff Bennett at the Federal Observer, and others who stumbled upon the information that was sent to schools and teachers in advance of this controversial speech. The State will attempt to defend itself by pointing out that Obama will be encouraging children to work hard in school and learn all they can for a global economy. (He will cross his fingers behind his back and then tell how he approves of citizens being well informed, better educated, and more active, but Acorn thugs at health care town halls have already proven such talk to be a travesty, at best.) The problem with the usurpation of nationwide instructional time on September 8 is not so much the message, but the manner. What gives Obama the legal right to trod upon the Constitution in this, and other matters? Nothing gives him the right. But this time, his timing is excellent because…. There is no time like September 8, 2009, to begin homeschooling your children. There are a multitude of successful examples to follow. There are books to guide parents. There are web sites offering help, lesson plans, and worksheets. At Exodus Mandate, Ray Moore and his group encourage every Christian to remove their children from secular schools. I agree with them. Why should parents be expected to enroll their children in today’s unholy schools … schools run by people who deeply disapprove of students being taught that ethics, morals, and religion will be their personal, safe anchors in a frightening and deceitful world? Other resources include the Home School Legal Defense Association. Visit their site to learn the homeschooling laws for your state. For suggestions on curriculum, teaching methods and more, visit my archives. Beware of reading programs that are as ineffective as the public schools and look into The Spalding Method. Learn how fuzzy progressive math is destroying the mathematical potential of millions of children and learn which books NOT to buy. Visit sites like The Well-Trained Mind for suggestions and support. Scour the Internet! The lives and educations of your children are worth every effort, every sacrifice, on your part. Do not say, “We would like to but simply cannot.” Make the commitment and you will find a way. Look about you as you put together a homeschooling plan. Can grandparents give some or even much of the instruction? What about other relatives? Would neighbors be interested in forming a homeschooling co-op? Could members of your church work together to school the children of the congregation? How much instruction could be done in the evenings after work days? Bing the topic! Google the topic! Visit the library! Put an ad in the paper asking if there are others seeking to accomplish the same thing. On September 8, keep your children out of school and take the whole family out for a great day of adventure and real learning. Better yet, on September 8, keep your children out of school and homeschool them for at least kindergarten through grade 12.

Right On ! ! ! Sing it out Linda Schrock Taylor!!! Tell the beautiful truth!!! Obama and his regime of pigs, swine and thugs make me sicker to my stomach with each passing day. He is not my president. I detest and despise him and everyone working for and with him. |
Read the suggestions for teachers BEFORE and During andAFTER the speech! The indoctrination will last much longer than one day, as preparing for the speech includes reading books about Obama, and the AFTER suggestions will make you sick! |

... My daughter is in the 4th grade this year, and I thought it was the perfect time for her to start learning about politics. We watched the candidate debates together, and discussed our local issues. We took her with us when it was time to vote, and kept her up to watch the election results come in. We impressed upon her the importance of becoming... Unroll Parchment an informed, educated citizen, who is knowledgeable of the rights and responsibilities of a good American citizen. I am excited to learn that she will have the opportunity to listen to a message "to her" from our President. I'm sure it will be a sparking point for another great round of family discussions when she gets home. |

Socialism It seems that in order to get a better voting base you must indoctrinate young people in socialism or fascism. Obama is doing just that. From what I've read he hasn't informed the parents of students of this indoctrination. Why? |
Doesn't matter who is the POTUS ... I realize Laura Bush was not the POTUS, but the First Lady visited many, many schools, one at a time. And I have no problem with any POTUS, or this POTUS, visiting schools, but I do have a problem with the unorthodox way the president is going about this "speech." |
... This is not merely a President or First Lady coming to make a visit on a special holiday or a reading event. This a specific occasion (close to the health care debate I might add), with specific questions that are aimed at indoctrination. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro, etc... all did to the kids in schools- it is no different. All you who are getting upset at those who want to take their kids out from this- this is none of your business. The parents have a right to take their kids out if they feel it is necessary to do so- They are the parents you know, not Obama or the state. |

... I'm just a stay at home mom. I read these memos to the schools, I did a google & bing search...why isnt there any major news or media outlets reporting on this? Why only the blogs have mentioned it? Why the secretive way its going about? If The Administration had a purpose and a wonderful message to encourage our kids, why the backdoor method? I'm sort of concerned by how this came about. I sent it in an email to my email list. Im posting on my facebook. I want to hear from other parents? My children will not be attending school on September 8th. I can tell you that. I dont trust this. I'd like to hear it myself before I aprove it. I have done my best as a parent to protect my children from harm, it is my right. Regardless is the Public Schools are funded by the government or not. As tax payers, we pay for it, "WE the PEOPLE" it does not give them exclusive rights to push an agenda at our children without us knowing whats contained in it. Go to Obama.com and you will see how his folks refer to regular Americans as "Domestic Terrorists" because they disagree with Health Care Bill...its' getting pretty sick, when they are allowed to get away with this kind of labeling on US citizens and if the tables where turned there would be an outcry from everyone. Why the doublestandard? Why such onesided hate comments |

... interesting that someone so hostile to state involvement in education is a teacher at... a state university. Maybe the government isn't purely evil? |

I have no children of my own - - - - - - but I do come from a very large family (the first born, as a matter of fact). I feel sorry for these children. It looks as though our out-of-control, rogue fedgov is attempting to get its own type of Hitler Youth thing going behind the backs of the parents. Read your history. Compare notes. |
Why all of a sudden is everyone who has their kids in public school so worried? The Dept. of Education has been indoctrinating kids with government propaganda for decades and decades...where has everyone been? Indoctrination is the point of the public school system. Work to abolish the Federal and State involvement in re-educating your kids to be mindless statists, and, as the diarist advocates in her post, bring your kids home, where they belong, if you are so appalled by this. |
We Don't need no thought control... Ubummer will speak to school kids on september 8th. Every parent who must surrender their kid up to a public school on that day for whatever reason, should encourage his or her Child to chant during the speech the words from Pink Floyd's "The Wall". "WE DON'T NEED NO EDUCATION WE DON'T NEED NO THOUGHT CONTROL" Teach your kids civil disobedience! Start organising! Let the kids drown out UBummer's Words! |

A suggested curriculum to get you started homeschooling Here are some popular schooling styles: http://www.rustymason.com/edu/alted.html An (evolving) outline of a classical homeschooling curriculum, including books and articles for parents about schooling, education, and educational history: http://www.rustymason.com/edu/curriculum.html I update it every semester as I learn more. Suggestions appreciated. |

Mrs. Shields - - - - - - I think what's happening is that Americans are finally waking up. I hope that is so and I hope it isn't too late. I sure don't like to use a left wing "liberal" as a source, but there's a woman named Naomi White who has a pointed out ten similarities between the decline of Germany and the United States of America into fascism/socialism. If I had any hair, it would have stood up on end when I read just part of what she has to say. If I remember correctly, one of the things was the forming of the Hitler Youth Groups. As I say, I hate to use a "liberal" lefter as a source, but when its right, its right and its very frightening that left and right now agree on so many points...VERY frightening. |
If I may add, please - - - - - - Though I hve no children, I faithfully paid my taxes which helped to support the publid (read: government) shcools and I watched the downhill slide of the system with horror. There was a vast difference between the time I graduated and the time my baby brother graduated. I charge all of the damage to the "liberal" left and their forcing upon the students the heresy of Darwin and the filth of Freud (to name the major two). I have nothing but respect for parents who pull their children out of the cesspools of the publie (government) school system, thereby protecting them from being intelledtually murdered by that foul, noxious system. |

... Where was all the anger when Bush senior did the same thing? Please post just as intensely. When a gop crook is in office. |

Notification from my child's public school Fortunately the school my child attends in Northern KY has sent notification leters home about the speech next week. They also sent a consent form home. The best thing they have done is indicated they will only show the speech on the 9th, after parents have had the opportunity to see the speech on the official web sites. |

The state owns you and your children What made anyone here, believe that the government serves the people's interest, rather than the other way around? The government makes the rules, and the people can't change it except by jumping through hoops and electing new MEMBERS of government-- we can't vote to change it directly by convening and voting. That means we don't govern ourselves: the STATE does. How hard is that to understand? |

... Reading this post from Linda Taylor just breaks my heart. It makes me feel so disappointed in my fellow Americans. First, Regan and Bush Sr. also delivered televised messages. Were you protesting then? Next, it is on the news - I just read about it on my online local news page before I saw this posted. It's no secret. Furthermore, all he's planning to say is that children should work hard and stay in school. What's so wrong with that? He's planning to send a transcript of the speech out to parents on Monday. Finally, the school in our area is evidently asking parents to send a note if they do not wish their children to see the video. Your crazed bias against this president scares me. |
The medium is the message What Obama says is not important. The message is that the president, (any president, but this one in particular), is a kind, well-meaning, avuncular figure, whose words have extraordinary veracity. The medium is the message. From all accounts, the content of the speech is innocuous. When you discuss it with your child, ask what makes one man more believable than another. Does it make a man better if he puts flags all around him? Is a man's opinion any better or worse because some other people can make children listen to him? Is a man on television a better man than someone who is not on TV? Talk about how to make an effective speech. Can it be faked? In other words, is a good actor better at giving speeches than someone else? How do you tell if someone believes what they are saying? (Answer: A lot of times, you cannot.) Ask what the child thinks government does. Is is always good? When it is not good, what can be done about it? If a president asks you to do something, should you think about it or just do it? What if someone with flags on TV were to tell you to do something you thought was bad, what should you do? |
Deny, deny deny Suse: "First, Regan and Bush Sr. also delivered televised messages. Were you protesting then?" No, because 1) there were no such presidents-- perhaps you mean "Reagan" and "George H. W. Bush, and 2) a televised speech isn't the same as one delivered to a captive audience of children in government schools. "Next, it is on the news - I just read about it on my online local news page before I saw this posted. It's no secret." It's on the news that he's going to say it, but we won't know WHAT he's going to say. "Furthermore, all he's planning to say is that children should work hard and stay in school. What's so wrong with that?" Your blind faith in his vaguely stated "plans," when he calls himself "the agent of CHANGE." If he just wanted to say "work hard and stay in school," that doesn't take a speech-- just SIX WORDS, "work hard and stay in school." Obviously he's going to be saying it in a different way... which you'll obviously excuse again, since he can do no wrong in your eyes. "He's planning to send a transcript of the speech out to parents on Monday." Are we supposed to be grateful, that we get to know what will be said AFTER the fact? Are parents supposed to erase kids' memories of the part we don't like? "Finally, the school in our area is evidently asking parents to send a note if they do not wish their children to see the video." So now they need permission to AVOID something that isn't in the school curriculum-- as well as putting their name on a list. "Your crazed bias against this president scares me." Such a statement, only proves that your crazed bias FOR him is making you paranoid. |
... Jive Davidson: "When you discuss it with your child, ask what makes one man more believable than another." Children don't know that, because most ADULTS don't know. What makes one man more believable than another, is PUBLICATION: Winston Churchill put this best, when he said "there is no such thing as public opinion-- only PUBLISHED opinion." If something is stated with no real opposition, then it will be believed-- particularly if it's something that the audience WANTS to believe. That's why radio-righties like Limbaugh and Hannity blab the same thing over and over for 3 hours/day EACH: so that the message will be believed, regardless of its twisted nature. And Obama isn't exactly going to give equal time to the other side. Kids go to school for education, not indoctrination-- supposedly; however this only shows that the supposition is false. |
Typical Progressive Response... "You morons are too stupid to raise kids." That's right. That's why "It Takes A Village," correct? "What Is A Yankee?" http://olgreyghost.blogspot.com/2009/05/what-is-yankee.html |

What?!?!?!?!?!?! Students are not required to watch this speech! Are you serious? In the style of dictators? You mean like Reagan, H.W. Bush etc? I think your homeschooling has failed you again. Many presidents have addressed the future of our nation. Anyone that does not use this as a teaching moment is...well, most likely a homeschooler. This is a great topic to discuss with those who the president will be addressing and with those whose lives education effects most. The students are not required to watch, but they should...mostly those in High School and in Civics classes where they can discuss and debate...hell...even argue the points made by the President. Unreal!!! |
WTF? Ol' Grey Ghost: WTF are you talking about? Do you even have any sort of idea how ignorant you sound? So...I've got to ask you, how do get your hobnailed boots so shiny? |
Yes I don't know why so many of you are getting worked-up about this speech. The schools have functioned as government indoctrination camps for decades. Children are taught to be good little taxpayers in an environment that is as close as you can get to a real prison without actually being in prison. You will obey or else. However, your kids are smarter than you may think. As government gets more openly corrupt, the kids are rapidly losing faith and once that indoctrinated trust is gone..... It's gone. As an example our local governments are pushing their law enforcement officers to write more traffic citations as a means of bolstering municipal revenues. To the point that the local high school kids now refer to the cops as "road side tax collectors". And law enforcement hasn't helped the matter by treating all taxpayers as "the enemy". The older kids are aware that the Obama administration has spent $31,000+ per US citizen this year expanding the foreign wars (so much for "change you can believe in"), maintaining hundreds of military bases in foreign countries and bailing-out the "too-big-to-fail" corporations (banks and car companies). They've taken to calling Obama "Bush-lite". And they are wondering where the tax rates are headed to pay for all of Obama's spending extravagance in the future. Tax rates that will be imposed upon them for things they had no voice or influence over the money spent. (As if anyone in DC listens to the taxpayers anyway) A speech to the public school kids isn't going change the fact that the Federal government is financially and morally bankrupt. And who knows, maybe Obama will manage to avoid lying to the kids. It would be a refreshing "change". "People should not be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people." |

... To the Reich-Wing-so-called Christian conservatives, who wouldn't know the Messiah if he sat down next to them in their churches, that continue to use the veil of Constitutionalism in order to spew your vile hatred and racisim. You know who you are. The O'Hannity, O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham crowd that do not mind letting your kids ingest the hatred that permeates every fiber of Fox News that continually encourages disrespect for the office of the Presidency if it does not have a Republican in it. Your blind obedience to your religion bleeds into your blind obedience to your party. When did an encouraging word to our youth, who for the first time in our history will not be as financially secure as the previous generation, turn into an indoctrination ceremony. You people are truly shameless. |

previous speeches, constitution and patriotism... First off I would like to say that I am not a parent. I am an aunt of school age children, and I worry about their education. I am also a big proponent of education. In regards to what people are saying about the lack of uproar about Reagan and George HW Bush's speeches to students, perhaps some of those responding to this article were children at that time. Others perhaps weren't as politically educated as they are now. Also they were presidents some 18+ years ago and those who had school aged children at that time probably aren't the ones responding to this article, so asking why they aren't upset about those speeches is ridiculous. They themselves were in school or were possibly too young to even be in school. I know I wasn't even in school when these speeches were made by Reagan and Bush. |
previous speeches, constitution and patriotism cont... Also to Kirsten Nicholson, you make the claim that Mrs. Taylor hasn't read the constitution. I just have to say obviously you haven't or if you have then you don't comprehend it or maybe you only read/remember the parts that fit your agenda. If you had read all of it and remembered what you read then you would remember a very important amendment known as the 10th amendment. Here it is: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Notice the first clause says "powers NOT delegated to the United States by the Constitution". Tell me, where in the Constitution does it state that the federal government is allowed to control, influence, prohibit, etc education? The federal government has been violating the Constitution by inteferring with education. Sure its been going on for years but that doesn't make it right. And from reading other articles of Mrs. Taylor's, it is my opinion that she has been speaking out against government interference in education for quite some time. As to being patriotic, I think by pointing out the things government is doing that are unconstitutional (no matter what area), Mrs. Taylor is being very patriotic. |

Here is the speech, in all its indoctrination-free glory http://www.whitehouse.gov/Medi...olRemarks/ So THIS is what you were all afraid of huh? This is a valid reason to pull your kids out of school today? Oh my - it is SOOOOO inflammitory - why it was just rife with blatant political rhetoric! What a bunch of lunatics to run around saying that our president was going to brainwash our children-- INTO WORKING HARD IN SCHOOL! db - You may cite the 10th amendement as your way of defending Ms. Taylor's remarks about this speech being in violation of her constitutional rights - but that argument is old and tired and, well, twisted. You can try to make it "fit", but it does not hold up in this case. Why? Because the individual states are not being FORCED by the Federal government to show the speech. Each state, each individual school, each individual student has the right to exercise their right on whether or not to listen to the speech. That is NOT an infringement on an individual's constitutional rights. Which, BTW, is also how the Bush administration got around it when they pushed through education-killing NCLB. States don't HAVE to implement the new standards, but they won't get Federal funding (as if they EVER will get the amount they were promised in the proposed budget) if they don't comply. Fair? No. Legal? Yes. Hey - even former First Lady Laura Bush came out in support of this speech. Don't be a bunch of idiots and run like a lemming for the nearest cliff just because our president is giving a speech to America's students on (for some) their first day of school to inspire them and ignite a desire to work hard and set learning goals. Inform yourselves on what it ACTUALLY says, and don't reley on the blind beliefs of right-wing conservatives who cannot let any conspiracy theory die (no matter HOW ridiculous) in order to push their agenda. God Bless our President and his message today to our children, and may we all strive to work just as hard for the betterment of our country. |

PSPS Dump the Public School Prison System. Unfortunately most people today are too busy to spend time with and actually be mothers and fathers to their children. As has been the case to most children in America for the past 100 years. What the American Establishment did to Native Americans will now be done to Americans. The Parties Over. Democratic Schools/homeschooling/unschooling are you last hope. |
