Today we remember the events of 9/11 and the people who lost their lives in this terrorist attack.

In the wake of that terrible day, we initiated a War on Terror to stop the terrorists from ever hurting us again. Unfortunately, little has been done in the way of eliminating terrorism and our Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, tells us through an interview in
USA Today that, “We will always live in a terrorist threat environment.”

Always? Perhaps the reason she believes so is that very little progress has been made to eliminate terrorist organizations. The question must be asked, therefore, is our government dealing with the right enemy?

The War on Terror has dragged on now for longer than our involvement in World Wars I and II combined. In a few more months, you may add the Korean War in with the combination of World Wars as well. This seems difficult to believe until you add up the months and years involved.

One would think that the war in Iraq would have done more than simply change one onerous regime for another. It has done little if anything to eliminate terrorism. In fact, a case can be made that it has caused its growth. There were few bombings in Iraq, if any, prior to our occupation. And, the occupation seems to have helped the terrorist in their recruiting efforts.

Now we hear that we can eliminate terrorism if we win in Afghanistan. Or, Pakistan. Maybe Iran. Someplace.

Instead of eliminating terrorism, what has happened instead is that the face of America has changed more than anything in the equation due to the Patriot Act, hastily passed after 9/11.

Those who died on 9/11 should be honored by remembering that they were victims in a war aimed at American freedom. And, freedom should not be curtailed in their name.
