Scientists Petition on Both Sides of Global Warming Debate PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Climate change or Global WarmingIn the wake of the “Climategate” revelations and accusations from members of the U.S. Congress that scientists allegedly implicated in efforts to suppress studies undermining the theory of manmade climate change were engaged in “scientific fascism,” the inevitable push back has begun.

The 31,000 American scientists who have signed the petition opposing the Kyoto agreement all agree that:

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.

For some reason their skepticism regarding anthropogenic global warming doesn’t get much attention from the media. Go figure.

Now 1,700 British scientists have signed a petition in support of the troubled theory, and it’s a safe bet that they will have a much easier time getting the ear of the press.

According to The Times of London,

The Met Office has embarked on an urgent exercise to bolster the reputation of climate-change science after the furore over stolen e-mails.

More than 1,700 scientists have agreed to sign a statement defending the “professional integrity” of global warming research. They were responding to a round-robin request from the Met Office, which has spent four days collecting signatures. The initiative is a sign of how worried it is that e-mails stolen from the University of East Anglia are fuelling scepticism about man-made global warming at a critical moment in talks on carbon emissions.

One scientist said that he felt under pressure to sign the circular or risk losing work. The Met Office admitted that many of the signatories did not work on climate change.

John Hirst, the Met Office chief executive, and Julia Slingo, its chief scientist, wrote to 70 colleagues on Sunday asking them to sign “to defend our profession against this unprecedented attack to discredit us and the science of climate change”. They asked them to forward the petition to colleagues to generate support “for a simple statement that we . . . have the utmost confidence in the science base that underpins the evidence for global warming”.

But despite protestations of spontaneity, there are apparently some scientists who felt they were pressured to sign.

One scientist told The Times he felt under pressure to sign. “The Met Office is a major employer of scientists and has long had a policy of only appointing and working with those who subscribe to their views on man-made global warming,” he said.

Professor Slingo denied that the Met Office had put anyone under pressure. “The response has been absolutely spontaneous. As a scientist you sign things you agree with, not because you are worried about what the Met Office might think of you,” she said.

Peer pressure is a very powerful thing in almost any area of human activity, and certainly resisting peer pressure in the sciences raises fears — whether justified or not — when it comes time to procure future research grants. It will be interesting to see whether or not other scientists will come forward in the near future claiming that they also felt pressured to sign. However, regardless of the issues of spontaneity and peer pressure, The Times highlights the fact that the signatories represent but a fraction of British scientists.

With the Copenhagen conference in full swing, and the theory which is the ideological justification for the entire meeting now facing widespread public and scientific ridicule, the urge among supporters of the theory to rally their supporters is understandable, but needs to be kept in perspective.

What the public needs is to confront statements which begin “According to scientists...” with a healthy measure of skepticism. The debate surrounding global warming is so contentious because of the highly theoretical nature of the models which are utilized by proponents of manmade climate change. The “Climategate” revelations are the sort of thing which causes many within the scientific community to become alarmed precisely because the allegation is that the credibility of the scientists at the very heart of creating the global warming theory has been fundamentally compromised.

Scientific truth cannot be established by polls; what is needed is data and independent verification of the assertions made by the advocates of the theory. But with much of the original data destroyed, locked behind “confidentiality” agreements, or challenged because of the manner in which it was collected, manmade climate change is farther away from being seen as “settled science” today than it was six months ago, and the extreme actions being contemplated by the Copenhagen conference are less justifiable than ever before.

The "theory" of human caused climate change cannot be science without repeatable experimental data. Unfortunately the history of science is replete with examples of "scientists" deciding whether or not a theory is true or false by poll. The prime example is the decision circa 1934 to remove negative energy states from science. The Dirac Wave Equation had four roots--two with positive energy states and two with negative energy states. Without the negative energy state electrons and positrons physics required a host of unobservable sub-atomic particles. Peer pressure

"Peer pressure is a very powerful thing..."

Indeed it is, but it is nowhere near as intense as the pressure from management when it appears you are "not a team player". Not being a team player can easily lead to a poor performance review. This in turn leads to missed promotions, smaller (or no) pay increases or bonuses, and perhaps even being fired. When an individual is ignored by management, his peers begin to look unfavorably upon him because he doesn't appear to be contributing as much to the team.

If you do not support management, you are not supporting the team.
If you imply budget cuts are possible (i.e., lower budget next year), you are DEFINITELY not a team player.
Anything you do or say (or don't do or say) that hints at team disunity is a no-no.
If a petition comes your way, and you are told you don't HAVE to sign it, you had better sign it because if you don't, it WILL be remember at the next performance review!

The way most "teams" operate, you either "voluntarily" cooperate, OR ELSE!

Peer Pressure and Beyond

I agree with rprew's estimation of how "peer pressure" and being coerced by management works. If science is truly scientific, then the law of repetition must be used to establish the ultimate scientific fact. If you do not believe that scientists are being coerced to sign on by peer pressure "or else", I would encourage you to watch Ben Stein's movie "Expelled." In it he interviews a number of scientists who were once considered "golden" by the scientific community, but when these same scientists started using words like "creation" or "intellectual design" they were mocked, ridiculed and eventually pushed out of the scientific community altogether! It appears that the current administration is able to use this same kind of "peer pressure" to coerce, not only science, but the news media, the political process and (I'm afraid) the population as well, to once again believe that a naked Emperor is fully clothed...when in fact, it is true; "The Emperor has no clothes on!"

Who's on the Petition?

Interesting... had a look at the 31000 scientist petition. Picked the name M. Robert Aaron, at random, and found that he died in 2007. Weird.

Read the FAQ, Asf...

Perhaps if you'd checked the FAQ for the petition, "ASF," you would have noticed that they've been collecting signatures since 1998. As noted in the article, the petition began in reaction to the '97 Kyoto Protocol.

But as I mentioned in an earlier posting

Why would the Eco Fascists want to be bothered with such annoyances as facts and repeatable experimental data when it so much more fun to lie and posture and, hopefully, gain some sort of power over people?

wake up

This new religion and former science (climatology) is a scam. Most of the believers (climatolojists) will argue that crazy people like me refuse to acknowledge the facts and data on global warming. Well, as to the question of weather or not the Earth is getting warmer, it is.
Now, where people like me and climatolojists differ is in the MAN MADE part. A scientific mind must be SKEPTICAL by nature and not influenced by any ideological or political pressures. We must also be very careful to separate correlation and causation. Just because two events happen at the same time does not mean that they are linked in any way. Scientists have done much research on the subject. It seams that governments around the world repress any scientific facts that are contrary to this new fascism. Fact = all other planets are also warming at same rate as Earth. The EPA's own report was suppressed by the current administration in June 09 because it did not reflect current policies, Google it, I dare you to think for yourself. To understand why climatolojy is so insidious, you only need ask, who benefits? Lets just prepare to live in a warmer world for a while.

Global Warming IS Human / Industrial Pollution

Global Warming-IS- Human / Industrial Pollution
The best indisputable SCIENCE example that should be the #1 item on the Copenhagen Agenda would be the toxic waste dump, the size of Texas, 900 miles off of the United States and Canadian West Coast.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GreatPacificGarbagePatch
That is a Big SCIENCE problem with no dedicated U.S SCIENCE and INNOVATION DEPARTMENT to address the issue. The U.S (or Canada) has not even sent out a SCIENCE research vessel to evaluate this ecological disaster; neither country wants to take the responsibility for the industrial/human pollution or even acknowledge its existence.
No Profit-No Action!-No SCIENCE! Will the World Trade Organization and the New Industrial World Order address the issue? Where is their World SCIENCE Department?
Can the problem be solved with SCIENCE? Probably so, Americans are very ingenious primarily because we were raised with the compliments of Freedom and Democracy and are free thinking individuals. We could probably figure a way to clean up the mess and possibly make a profit doing so.
We can do nothing until we have a DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE that is free to address SCIENCE and to develop the advancement of SCIENCE. (Yes, for the sake of humanity; SCIENCE FIRST-PANDERING SECOND.)

SCIENCE and INNOVATION

Fact: American green energy innovation and ingenuity, science really, hasn’t been funded since 2001.
www.eere.energy.gov/inventions
New renewable energy inventors have no stimulus grant money to develop their inventions. The Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and in particular, Dr. Chu, has snuffed any new green energy advancements. Their agenda is to do research and development of product line for the multinational corporations and keep American innovation down.
Old patented science advancements in green energy inventions (outmoding fossil fuels) were bought up by the multinational corporations and kept off of the market so that they would not upset their New World Manufacturing Order agenda. The last World conquer was Hitler.
Yes, it is a win- win for Communist China and the multinational corporations and a loss- loss for Democracy and Freedom and the American people. Remember, the American manufacturing base moved to China for cheap labor; (graduate engineer $7,000 a year and most everyone else $700 a year) their allegiance is now with Communist China.
Bush played the bad cop, Obama plays the good cop, but the fact is we are still on the same agenda. There is no change, the free press is gone. The treason of the multinational corporations and their owned and controlled congress continues. There will be no rebuilding of America’s manufacturing capabilities from the ground up with new inventions. There will only be more debt for the American people and dominance of our government by the multinational corporations New World Order agenda.
Ask your government representatives WHY there is no funding for new inventions (advancement in science) to build a new American economy.

when will people wake up

When will people wake up.I absolutely believe in climate change just not this man made climate change con. The real problem with this planet is the greedy moneymakers dictating false scenarios for their own benefit not the welfare of the earth. When will the real threats of deforestation, overpopulation, pollution and consumerism of none essential commodities be fully addressed.I always thought it was water vapour that increased earths temperature .Its impossible to predict any climate change. The climate has changed untold times, its nature. Stop trying to think you can change or alter the planet by pathetic c02 manipulation and combat the real issues.Stop being sheep. If you research well enough you will find what a bunch of lying, immoral, self interested "people?" are running countries, who can afford to cut and run and fail to be accountable when things go wrong. It really sickens me how people fall for this clap trap over and over.Just remember people these idiots in charge wont be sitting at home watching their pennies as you continually fund this spiralling con.How many of you will be recompensed when it turns out to be yet another lie.
