Our Position

In assessing the threat posed to the right of self-defense by incremental civilian disarmament measures, we should ever remember Edward Gibbon's observation: "A nation of slaves is always prepared to applaud the clemency of their master who, in the abuse of absolute power, does not proceed to the last extremes of injustice and oppression."

 The John Birch Society believes that the right to keep and bear arms distinguishes free citizens from slaves; it is the paramount right protected by our Constitution, since it in principle protects all the others. All efforts to undermine that right must be resisted.
