Aside from the fairly transparent United Nations agenda, the UN Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development offered a great deal of insight into the forces working together against national sovereignty, private property, individual liberty, and economic freedom. Big business was there — mostly begging for more government control and taxpayer money. A wide assortment of tax-funded “non-governmental organizations” — known as NGOs for short — was there, too. Unsurprisingly, they mostly demanded more government control. The press was there cheerleading every step of the way.

RIO DE JANEIRO – A scandalous publicity stunt that saw Rio’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue turned green for the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development backfired big time, UN critic and environmental realist Lord Christopher Monckton told The New American in an exclusive interview under the monument after the “sustainability” summit ended. And the Marxist-minded “environmental religion,” as he called it, failed spectacularly in its ongoing effort to displace Christianity.

On the last day of the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, virtually every national government and dictatorship on Earth signed an agreement dubbed “The Future We Want.” The “We,” of course, did not include regular citizens — it was mostly a coalition UN functionaries, dictators, tax-funded environmentalist organizations, and Big Business bosses seeking to profit at taxpayer expense.

The freedom movement lost two courageous leaders this past month, Henry Lamb and Tommy Cryer. Our movement is poorer for their passing, but our nation’s richer from their lives.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Communist Chinese diplomat Sha Zukang, in his capacity as Secretary General of the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, announced hundreds of “commitments” by governments and businesses on so-called “sustainability” worth more than half a trillion dollars. And incredibly, much of the audience — supposedly unbiased members of the media — applauded in delight.

They’re baack! After two decades, the UN’s eco-globalist faction has returned to Rio de Janeiro to put the “plan” back in “planet.” Now that we’re more than a decade into the new century, the globocrats have convened at Rio+20 in order to fine-tune their agenda.

The New American's Senior Editor Bill Jasper reports on admissions by ICLEI leaders at the UN's Rio+20 Conference that they are now substituting "sustainable development" for "climate change" as their main panic motivator.

In this roving interview on June 20, Alex Newman caught up with two leaders of the Socialist International Women, Gro Harlem Brundtland and Mary Robinson, at the UN’s Rio+20 conference.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Amid the thousands of people assembled at the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development calling for global government and anti-market “solutions” to alleged planetary “sustainability” and “biodiversity” problems, a vocal coalition of environmental realists who refuse to buy the UN-backed agenda are calling for some sanity — market solutions, real science, and national sovereignty. Some have even proposed abolishing the controversial global institution altogether.

The following article (reprinted here with permission) originally appeared as a chapter in the 1992 book Global Tyranny ... Step by Step by William F. Jasper, who had attended the original Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro earlier that year. We have republished the chapter on the occasion of the Rio+20 Summit not only because Mr. Jasper's analysis has held up well against the test of time, but also because the developing UN-dominated global green regime he warns against is more advanced and threatening than it was 20 years ago. — Editor
