Federal auditors recently issued a report charging a Kansas-based medical manufacturer with potentially paying out more than $4 million in fraudulent Medicare claims for “male vacuum erection systems,” more commonly known as “penis pumps.” In turn, the auditors requested that the company reimburse all the money to the federal government and “implement policies and procedures to help ensure that it collects and maintains the required documentation.”
JBS CEO Art Thompson's video news update for June 18-24, 2012.
His brooding countenance stares out at us from a prominent place on the newsstand. Chances are you will not recognize the face. At first glance you might think it's the return of Alan Greenspan, the man who's sober stewardship of the Federal Reserve System included a memorable description of the stock market's "irrational exuberance." The large print on the cover of Time magazine calls him "THE DECIDER." Well, that could be Mr. Greenspan, who decided interest rates and money supply for many years. But no, the cover tells us that title goes to Justice Anthony Kennedy, most often the "swing vote" in an evenly and ideologically divided court that resolves many disputes in 5-4 decisions. Since the four liberals and four conservatives vote in generally predictable patterns, Kennedy's unpredictable vote is the lever of power, potentially deciding everything, as the cover tells us with anxious anticipation, "from gay marriage to ObamaCare."
If you thought New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to limit the size of sodas sold at certain city venues was already bad, just wait till the city Board of Health gets through with it. The 11-member board not only voted to take the next step toward making the Mayor’s proposal law, but also recommended that the ban be extended to other beverages and foods.
The debate incited by Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to outlaw supersized sodas in New York misses an important point. In the mayor’s words, “We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things. We’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup.” (Emphasis added.)
Notorious abortion purveyor Planned Parenthood is partnering with the Los Angeles public school district to place school-based “health” clinics in the city’s high schools, reported the Los Angeles Times. While birth rates in Los Angeles have been falling over the past several years, mirroring the drop statewide, there are still areas in the county where teen birth rates are high, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “The heavily Latino and low-income neighborhood around Roosevelt High School is one of them,” reported the Times, which is why the Los Angeles Unified School District has invited Planned Parenthood to set up shop there.
Pro-life leaders are concerned over a new pre-natal test researchers say will allow doctors to screen a pre-born baby for thousands of potential genetic defects.
Louisiana confirmed its reputation as America’s most pro-life state June 7 as Governor Bobby Jindal signed two bills into law that will further protect unborn babies and their mothers. “These new laws will help us foster a greater culture of life in Louisiana and ensure that we continue to protect the weakest and most vulnerable among us,” said the governor upon signing S.B. 330 and S.B. 708, known as the Hear the Heartbeat Act.
Tens of thousands of Christian and pro-life activists gathered in over 160 cities across America on June 8 to take a public stand against President Obama’s impending contraception mandate that would require employers to include free contraception in the health insurance they provide their employees. Such contraception would include abortion-causing drugs such as RU-486, referred to by pro-life activists as the “abortion pill.” Religious leaders have expressed alarm that the mandate would apply not only to secular businesses, but also to Christian institutions and non-profits, as well as to Christian business owners who are morally opposed to birth control and abortion.
Ah, the hypocrisy of the Left. Former Vice President Al Gore travels the world in a private jet to lecture everyone else on reducing carbon emissions. First Lady Michelle Obama tells people to eat veggies while she and her husband consume burgers, fries, cheesesteaks, and ice cream. And New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, trying to ban super-sized sodas on the theory that doing so will curb obesity, gives away free soda in unlimited quantities to employees of his media conglomerate, Bloomberg L.P.
